Whare Taonga at Takahanga Marae

Discover the Whare Taonga at Takahanga Marae, home to over 1000 taonga and artifacts unearthed after the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake also from Kaikoura Museum and the community with the support of Te Papa Taonga Rewa. This purpose-built facility, one of only two in Aotearoa at the time of completion, symbolizes the strong relationship between Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura and Crown agencies. It provides a place for manawhenua to connect with their whakapapa.

Supporting Ngāti Kuri Values

Our services reflect and support Ngāti Kuri values by preserving and promoting our cultural heritage. The Whare Taonga serves as a vital link for manawhenua to connect with their whakapapa. The taonga housed within, ranging from atua to everyday tools, tell the stories of our ancestors and reinforce our cultural identity.

Key Benefits for Our Community
